Glenlakes Bluebird Trail

Around July 15, 2007 the lady delivering the mail said “Mr. DuBose you have bluebirds nesting in your paper box under your mail box”. She then told me that all along Clubhouse Drive, Lakeview Drive and Wedgewood Drive other people also had bluebirds in their paper boxes. This got me to thinking about how the bluebirds needed homes to make a nest.
When I retired and built my home is was suppose to be a four bedroom but I ended up with a three bedroom and an air-conditioned work shop! I started to make bird houses for the neighborhood to be used in theri back yards. Sam Strite suggested that we start a “Bluebird Trail” for the Glenlakes Golf Club.
We got permission from Tim Cahill and Ron Prescott to allow us to put the boxes on any tree located on the Glenlakes Golf Course. This was all that was needed to start with major production of the “Bluebird Trail”.
I had made 96 boxes and cut out the next 48 when Ed Hewitt started to help me with the construction of the boxes. We not have 272 sponsors for boxes at $10 each. Pete Gingras has a name engraver and we were able to borrow it for him. I then ordered 300 name tags 1 1/2” x 3” to be engraved and received them on August 13, 2007. Linda Hewitt did all the engraving on the boxes. It took hours and hours to complete the engraving task! We have put the names on each box with the sponsor’s names.
I also ordered 140 large blue name tags that are 3” x 5” that have been added to the boxes within the 180 yard range with yardage to the center of the green. This should help the everyday golfer at Glenlakes with the yardage.

BLUEBIRD INFORMATION
|
|
|
|
|
|
To the left is the male bluebird. the females do not have as many blue feathers as the males. When boxes are not available, Bluebirds will make nest in woodpecker holes or dead trees. They prefer short grass with lots of insects around. The boxes should be about 4 to 5 feet off the ground. Once a years around November the boxes need to be cleaned out. Bluebirds will make a false nest if another box is too close together and lay eggs in only one of the boxes. They are very territorial.

FIRST NEST:
|
Female starts building nest last part of March or early April
|
|
|
Usually builds nest in 3-4 days (may take as long as 12 days at a time)
|
|
|
One egg laid per day after nest compete (5 eggs first clutch usually)
|
|
|
Female begins to brood eggs when all are laid- count this as first dayof brooding.
|
|
|
Female broods eggs for 12-14 days. Babies hatch all on same day.
|
|
|
Make feeds fledglings for nest two to three weeks.
|
|
SECOND NEST
|
Female builds second nest about 5 days after first brood has fledged.
|
|
|
Egg laying, brooding, and fledging follows as above
