Proposed Glenlakes Dog Park

February 18, 2010 Update

Why a “Dog Park” for Glenlakes?

Improves image of Glenlakes due to amenities.

If considering buying in Glenlakes Development the dog park provides a place to play and exercise their dogs.

Since “Lakeview Estates” does not allow fences for their yards this is a great alternative.

Puppies and adult dogs have a safer, enclosed place to play.

A well-exercised dog is a happier and healthier dog.

By their mere presence, dog owners (and their dogs) help deter crime, and frequently act as the eyes and ears of the police.

In an era where people are often reluctant or afraid to approach or converse with a complete stranger, dog parks bring people together and create a greater sense of community. Dogs help shy people “break the ice”.  People’s love for dogs often creates an important common ground which serves to break down social barriers.  Dogs (and dog parks) are in fact responsible for many lasting friendships between those who might never otherwise have met.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who will pay for the “Dog Park”?

Lakeview Estates will provide the initial investment for the white vinyl picket fence.

Where will the “Dog Park” be located?

On POA common ground located at Cty Rd 20 and Fairway Drive currently costing 1,300 each year to maintain without any benefits!

How much will the “Dog Park” cost Lakeview Estates?

Nothing! Lakeview Estates Dog Park users only will pay a yearly fee of $10 and other Glenlakes Development  Dog Park users only will pay $25 per year. This should generate $1,200 to $1,600 per year to off set cost of fence.

What is the liability to Lakeview Estates POA?

Nothing! Unlike other parks where anyone can use the park, this is a private park where only “member residents” can use the park. They must have a signed “lawsuit proof liability form” on file before using the park.

Who will keep the Dog Park clean?

Member residents will pick up after their own dog. Anyone found not to clean up will be permanently barred from the park.

What about fleas?

Since only Glenlakes residents can use the park nearly all dogs will be house dogs without fleas.  (not typical yard dogs)

Who will maintain the park?

The Volunteer Glenlake Dog Park Committee will maintain the park and monitor the operation.

I have seen Gulf Shores Dog Park and it looks awful!

Gulf Shores park was built beside the Police Dept on very low ground that never gets completely dry. Also, they used chain link fencing which is very unsightly. Our park will be constructed with decorative white vinyl picket fencing on one of the highest elevations in Lakeview Estates.  Even after a rain the next day it is completely dry.

What about neighbors by the park?

There would be a lot open between the Dog Park and Lot B-257.  The owners do not own a dog but have no problem with the park being located there. We would plant shrubs along the south side of the vinyl fence.

How would the Glenlakes  “Dog Park” work?

1.   Only residents of Glenlakes* can use the Glenlakes Dog Park.

2.     The white vinyl picket dog park fence will be purchased by Lakeview Estates and erected by volunteers on common property owned by Lakeview Estates POA. Annual Dog Park user fee/tag will offset approximately $1,300 annual cost for upkeep currently being paid by the Lakeview Estates POA. Contributions will be accepted for other amenities.  Make checks payable to the Glenlake Dog Park.

3.   Lakeview residents who use the Dog Park will pay an annual fee of $10 and $25 for other Glenlakes residents using the park.  This fee/tag will provide the owner a key or combination to the park gate. The tag must be worn when the dog is in the park.

4.   The Pet Owner must complete and turn in the application, liability waiver, veterinarian shot forms and payment to receive the Tag.    ( www.glenlakesfoley.com website will have forms for printing).

5.   Anyone not cleaning up after his or her dog will loose park privilege.

6.   Any guest of a Glenlakes Resident can use the park as long as liability waiver and vet shot forms are filled out and turned into a Dog Park Committee member.

7.   Dog Park Committee members will be listed on the Website: www.glenlakesfoley.com

The term “GlenLakes” refers to Lakeview Estates, The Gardens, The Villas and Carnoustie’s developments.

Park Etiquette - For Harmony at Harmony Make it a Perfect 10!

  • Please "SCOOP THE POOP" and use the waste cans provided
  • Respect the rights of all park users
  • Dogs are to be leashed when entering or leaving the leash free area
  • Dogs shall be in view of their owners at all times and under voice control
  • Dogs shall be licensed and fully vaccinated (puppies to have 12 week shots)
  • Parents, keep a watchful eye on your children
  • Respect wildlife and vegetation
  • Please remove pronged collars in the leash free areas (choke collars not advised)
  • DON'T LITTER
  • Dogs in heat, sick dogs and aggressive dogs are NOT allowed in the park
  • Canine Behavior and Communication
    • Understand canine communication. Dogs that enjoy rough and tumble play may growl and snap as part of that play. Dogs may also snarl and/or snap to "set their limits" with other dogs, for example, to let the other dog know they are being too rough or too pushy.
    • Dogs have various ways by which they communicate their dominance to other dogs. This may include a stiff-legged posture with the head held up and back; raising the hackles on the back; raising the tail; or laying the head across another dog's shoulders or back.
    • It's also important to be sensitive to the other dogs with whom your dog is playing. You should always watch your dog carefully and be prepared to intervene if the interaction seems to be going down the wrong road.
    • If your dog seems to be pestering or annoying another dog, divert his/her attention immediately. This means moving to another part of the park.
    • Utilize the park during non-peak hours to work with dogs that exhibit shyness, fear or aggressive behavior when they are in a larger dog group.
  • Don't be discouraged or disappointed if your dog doesn't jump right in and begin playing. Dogs that are not socialized at an early age sometimes are uneasy or just shy around other dogs. It may take a couple of tries, or even a few weeks of visits, before your dog comes out of his/her shell. Give your dog a little time and you will have a healthier, friendlier and more playful dog.

You must understand that you are participating in this activity at your own risk (and risk of your dog(s)). You are solely responsible for determining if you and/or your dog(s) are physically (or temperamentally) fit and/or adequately skilled to use the dog park. It is always advisable, especially if you or your dog(s) is pregnant, disabled in any way or recently suffered an illness, injury or impairment, to consult a physician or veterinarian before using the dog park.

    WARNING OF RISK

Dog activities are intended to provide a fun and rewarding experience for a dog(s) and its owner. However, despite careful and proper preparation, instruction, medical advice, conditioning and equipment, there is still a risk of serious injury, including death to either the dog(s) or its owner. Dogs are pack animals and when “off leash”, even the best-trained dogs will act instinctively. Understandably, not all hazards and dangers associated with dog activities can be foreseen. Certain inherent risks include the propensity of any dog to behave in dangerous ways that may result in injury to another patron or dog(s). Other risks include, but are not limited to the inexperience, negligence or irresponsibility of a dog owner; the inability to predict a dog’s reaction to sound, movements, objects, persons, or other animals; and actions by the dog(s) due to fright, anger, stress, insect bites, or natural reactions such as jumping, pulling, resisting and biting. Other risks include the hazards associated with environmental and traffic conditions, acts of God, inclement weather, slipping, falling, premises defects, failure in instruction and or supervision, and all other circumstances inherent to dog and outdoor activities. Should you attempt to break up a fight between dogs, you may be attacked and severely mauled by the other dog(s) or even attacked by the other patron. In this regard, it must be recognized that it is impossible for the Lakeview Estates POA to guarantee absolute safety.
